The exhibitions represent two ways to remember Van Gogh’s tragic end. At the artist’s museum in Amsterdam, canvases from his time in the French city are being brought together for the first time, while a show at the Met in New York displays the canvases on which Van Gogh reflected his obsession with cypress trees. Now, two exhibitions in different parts of the world focus on the work he produced during that time. This period has been studied in depth from the perspective of the artist’s psychosis and the episode in which he cut off part of his own ear, which occurred a little earlier. Van Gogh died on July 29, at the age of 37. In Auvers, on July 27, he shot himself in the chest with a pistol. “Shaped like an Egyptian obelisk,” as Van Gogh described the tree in a letter to his brother Theo, the cypress tree-which Catholics associate with cemeteries and which often appear on Mediterranean postcard landscapes-became an obsession as bleakness overtook Van Gogh. It was during this period that Van Gogh focused some of his attention on cypress trees. That amounts to an astonishing average of almost two works a day, including Wheatfield with Crows and Portrait of Dr. In a starred review, Booklist called Alyson Gerber's first novel, Braced, "a masterfully constructed and highly empathetic debut about a different kind ofĪcceptance." But that's what she's going to have to do, to find a way to focus. She's just not sure how you can fix a problem that's all in your head. When Clea fails one too many tests, her parents take her to be tested, and she finds out that she has ADHD, which means her attention is all over the place instead of where it needs to be.Ĭlea knows life can't continue the way it's been going. It's starting to be a problem-not just in school, but when Clea's playing chess or just hanging out with her best friend. but how can she do that when the people around her are always chewing gum loudly or making other annoying noises?
